Many locally available sustainable urban development solutions are innovative, but are often not sufficiently known. There is a lack of systematic access to these practice-oriented solutions, as well as to contacts. German cities offer a wealth of practical experience and approaches to sustainable urban development, which can be mobilised by local actors for joint learning projects, both in developing countries and in emerging economies and industrialised nations. On this basis, Connective Cities, the international city platform for sustainable development, has been established. It promotes local exchange and balances supply and demand.

Connective Cities is a cooperative project between the German Association of Cities and Towns (DST), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Engagement Global with its Service Agency Communities in One World.

In the Connective Cities Group, municipal experts from various cities in Germany and the countries bordering Syria exchange ideas, learn from each other, and develop concrete project ideas. The pressing urban challenges faced by refugee host communities require efficient and innovative solutions, especially relating to the provision of municipal basic services to the population. In addition to the fields of good urban governance, local economic development and integrated urban development, these are among the focal points of Connective Cities.

Joint learning in a group of experts from municipal entreprises, administration, science and academia, management and civil society takes place in dialogue and learning contexts such as workshops, training courses and study visits, as well as through virtual networking. The presentation of examples of good practice facilitates joint learning. Current challenges faced by the practitioners are discussed so that collegial advice can be given regarding their possible solutions. Joint project ideas are a point of reference for the development of innovative solutions.

Our approach centres on promoting the exchange of experience and partnerships between German municipalities and international cooperation projects, as well as with economic and research institutions, and on preparing solutions and lessons learned and feeding them back into the community of practice. Joint learning can take place in highly practical contexts such as studies, site visits, seminars and workshops.
